Prosecution Evidence Vault

During the quarter of a century that the Tribunal was operational the Prosecution collected millions of pages of documentary evidence, some 14,000 artefacts, thousands of photos, negatives and video stills, and more than 20,000 hours of audio and video recordings. The documentary evidence consisted of for instance correspondence, official records, military orders, reports and logbooks, diaries, maps and books. The artefacts ranged from ligatures and computers to tissue samples and weapons. The photographic, audio and video materials were in a great deal of analogue and digital formats, all of which added significant complexity to the storage and retrieval systems necessary for their use and archiving.

The Evidence Vault was located in the central part of the building, which was meant to hold the archives of the insurance company for which the building was originally built. The basement holding cells, parts of the lobby and Courtroom 2 were all constructed within this fortified internal structure, and literally stacked on top of each other.
