Courtroom 2
Courtroom 2 was inaugurated on 5 May 1998 having been funded by a British donation of GBP 300,000 (roughly USD 1,2 million at the time). It was meant to be an interim courtroom pending completion of the largest courtroom, Courtroom 3, but remained in operation until 2015. At about 250 m2 it was by far the smallest courtroom, designed to hear single-accused cases. As a consequence of the Tribunal’s increased caseload, in 2006 the courtroom was rebuilt to accommodate cases of up to three accused as well as all five judges of the Appeals Chamber. This enabled much greater flexibility in planning hearings.
Courtroom 2 was located in the middle of Chambers Legal Support and therefore surrounded by offices. As the Tribunal’s judicial activities wound down during its last years the courtroom was repurposed and made into a vault for the institution’s large archive (see MARS).
