Security and Safety Section
The Security and Safety Section was active around the clock every day of the year and was run from the Control Centre which also controlled the many security cameras scattered across the premises. Security Officers guarded all gates, patrolled the premises inside and outside and responded to calls for assistance. The Security and Safety section provided staff members with the official badges needed to enter the premises and access the areas to which they were supposed to have access. The building was divided into sections so that for instance staff in the Prosecution could not enter the Chambers area and vice-versa. The Security Officers also assisted staff members with more mundane matters, such as opening offices in the event that office keys had been forgotten at home.
Security Officers played a crucial role in making the hearings run smoothly. They met up with the Dutch police escort which brought the accused and convicted persons from the United Nations Detention Unit located in a Dutch prison. They then transferred them to the holding cells and then to Courtroom 1, Courtroom 2 or Courtroom 3. In court, Security Officers were constantly by an accused or convicted person’s side. Members of the Security and Safety Section had access to a gym on the premises which was not accessible by other staff members.
