Staff Union, Cafeteria and Training
The Staff Union was established in 1993 and represented and promoted the rights and welfare of staff members of the Tribunal. The Staff Union negotiated on behalf of staff members with senior management, assisted staff in the event of disputes with management and co-operated with organs of the United Nations in New York and Geneva on policy issues. Though the Tribunal ceased to exist on 31 December 2017 the Staff Union continues to operate and today represents the staff of the Tribunal’s successor organisation the IRMCT.
The cafeteria was in many ways the central meeting point of staff members. Over the course of the Tribunal’s existence it was run by a few different external contractors. The cafeteria was located on the same floor as Courtroom 3 and adjacent to the Tribunal’s big balcony which overlooked the pond.
There were a few training rooms where various types of trainings were held. Staff members had the option to take courses in for instance French and Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian (commonly called BCS).
